Phrases from book: “The boss was expectin’ you last night,” the old man said. “He was sore as hell when you wasn’t here to go out this morning.” He pointed with his right arm, and out of the sleeve came a round stick-like wrist, but no hand. “You can have them beds there, “ he said, indicating two bunks near the stove.(Steinbeck, 18)
“Curley stepped over Lennie like a terrier. “What the hell you laughin’ at?” Lennie looked blankly at him. “Huh?” Then Curley’s rage exploded. “Come on, ya big bastard. Get up on your feet. No big son-of-a-bitch is gonna laugh at me. I’ll show ya who’s yella.”(Steinbeck, 62) “Lennie said, “I thought you was mad at me, George.” “No,” said George. “No, Lennie. I ain’t mad. I never been mad, an’ I ain’t now. That’s a thing I want ya to know.”(Steinbeck, 106) Poem: Another start awaits For best buds George Lennie Who aren’t like any other travelers Cause George has Lennie and Lennie has George George tells Lennie not to speak Afraid that he will spill the tea Because although Lennie is kind and sweet He’s not too sharp and looks like he could beat Boss and son are mad Son Curley hates lennie for being tall because he is small He even has a wife who’s got the eye for other guys Then Lennie does something accidental He kills the wife All but George and Slim are judgemental George knows he is in trouble And to save Lennie from being tortured or worse He kills him himself to prevent worse For George and Lennie are best buds Different from all Because George has Lennie and Lennie has George

Chapter 5 in Of Mice and Men was very interesting. I thought it was really sad that the puppy died even though it was an accident. Also, I found it sad when Curley’s wife talked to Lennie and said how she never wanted to marry Curley and she isn’t happy with him and her life. Then when Lennie was petting her hair because she let him after he shared his love for soft things, and he wouldn’t let go because she was screaming, and it killed her. I think that being Lennie or his friend would be hard because Lennie is big and strong and and has done bad things but all of them were accidents. He actually is a really kind innocent person but only the people close to him know that. Also, I’m nervous to see how this all plays outs because even though it was an accident, Lennie did commit murder so George might be nervous and hesitant to escape from this mess.
Out of all the groups slideshows about topics in Of Mice and Men, I was the most interested in surface/deeper meaning. One example is when George and Lennie talk about how one day they’re going to buy their own land and talked about how they were going to run it and the things they would do. Lennie gets very excited when they talk about this and George is a firm believer that it will happen. This shows how the deeper meaning of this is how George really cares about Lennie because he is talking about his dreams and the future with Lennie in it. Another example is when Curley tries to beat us Lennie after he gets mad for being embarrassed by accusing Slim of having sex with his wife and Lennie accidentally hurts Curley when he tried to defend himself. The deeper meaning of this is since Curley has to be at the hospital for who knows how long, his wife will probably be more flirty than ever which will most likely cause problems.
In the book Of Mice and Men, Steinback shows loneliness and friendship, but overall, friendship is most prevalent. The other ranch workers say how people usually don’t travel and come together, unlike George and Lennie. George explains how he knew Lennie’s Aunt who raised him, and after she died, they stuck together. He then goes on to tell them about their trust and loyalty in their friendship. “I turns to Lennie and says, ‘Jump in.’ An’ he jumps. Couldn’t swim a stroke. He damn near drowned before we could get him. An’ he was so damn nice to me for pullin’ him out. Clean forgot I told him to jump in. Well, I ain’t done nothing like that no more.” (40, Steinbeck)George was telling Candy that Lennie listens to anything George tells him because he trusts him. This shows that even though Lennie might not be the smartest person on the planet, he is very loyal and sweet. Friendship is also shown in the book through Candy and George. “Voices were approaching from outside. George said quickly, “Don’t tell nobody about it. Jus’ us three an’ nobody else. They li’ble to can us so we can’t make no stake. Jus’ go on like we was gonna buck barley the rest of our lives, then all of a sudden someday we’ll go get our pay an’ scram outta here.”(page 61, Steinbeck) This was when George and Lennie tell Candy about their plans to buy their own land and how they will run it after they make enough money to buy it. Candy tells them that although he only has one hand, he can contribute half of the money to buy the place and help out with whatever he can. George is hesitant at first because he was planning on it just being Lennie and him, but agrees after Candy explains his benefits. At the end of the discussion they all agree to keep this just between the three of them and are all excited on someday finally buying their own land and creating a steady life. Those are two examples of how friendship is is prevalent over loneliness in the book Of Mice and Men.
